Difference between UNIX vs LINUX



UNIX and LINUX are both open source operating systems. Open source means that the source code of the operating system can be inspected as well as improved. The UNIX operating system was developed before LINUX.


Difference between UNIX and LINUX:
• The UNIX operating system is used in internet servers and workstations while LINUX is mostly used on personal computers.
• The UNIX operating system was developed at Bell labs while LINUX operating system is made by LINUX Torvalds.
• The LINUX operating system is based on the kernel of UNIX operating system.
• Although both the operating systems are open source but UNIX is relatively closed one as compared to LINUX.

Both share many common applications such as:
  1. GUI, file, and windows managers (KDE, Gnome)

  4. Development tools (perl, php, python, GNU c/c++ compilers)
  5. Posix interface

Linux is Free (as in beer [freedom]). You can download it from the Internet or redistribute it under GNU licenses. You will see the best community support for Linux. Most UNIX like operating systems are not free. File Systems
